7 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek vs Manaslu Circuit Trek: Routes, Difficulty, Cost & Key Differences

There are trekking trails for every sort of mountain enthusiast in Nepal. Some can be done in a week, others two weeks or longer, and can lead you deep into a remote valley. If you’re looking to explore the Himalayas, two distinct options stand out: the week-long Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the extended Manaslu Circuit Trek.
One leads to Annapurna Sanctuary, and climbers ascend to 4,130 metres. The other circles Mount Manaslu and crosses down the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). By examining the route, walking hours, elevation, cost, and experience, one will be able to get an idea of which route is best for the plans made.
7 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek vs Manaslu Circuit Trek: An Overview
The 7-days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is arranged around Pokhara-Base camp, a short but challenging trek. The trek traverses Gurung villages, forests, waterfalls, and ever higher and more alpine terrain along the way until reaching the base camp at 4,130m. The route is medium, but has several long walking days due to the short timeframe.
The Manaslu Circuit is much longer. The regular route is 14 days, which passes through villages like Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Shyala, Samagaon and Samdo to the high mountain stretch. The main peak is Larkya La (5106m).
What Makes the 7 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek Special?
What makes this trip attractive is the amount of Himalayan scenery you’re getting for one week. The trek starts around the lower hills and then slowly passes into the Annapurna Sanctuary.
The route goes through the well-known Gurung village of Ghandruk, through to Sinuwa, Bamboo, Dovan, and Deurali. The forest slowly fades as you move upwards on the trail to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and then Annapurna Base Camp, and the atmosphere changes to alpine.
The base camp at 4,130m is surrounded by impressive mountain scenery such as Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. The short walk is quite different, due to the cultural villages, the changing vegetation and the high mountain views.
But the schedule is not quite laid-back, either. These are several days of 7-8 hours of walking, and moderate fitness levels are important.
Manaslu Circuit Trek: A Journey Through Remote Himalayan Landscapes
The Manaslu Circuit Trek route is altogether a different scenario. It does not go to one base camp, but slowly revolves around the mountain of Mount Manaslu (8,163m).
The hike runs along the Budi Gandaki valley and passes through the old villages of the mountains, leading to the upper villages of Samagaon and Samdo. The trekkers visit monasteries, suspension bridges, river valleys, forests and increasingly rugged terrain as they go higher.
The trip is also culturally rich, with the Tsum and Nubri communities making up the region. The villages like Lho, Samagaon and Samdo are great places to experience traditional architecture, customs and monasteries of the Himalayas.
What to Expect on the Seven-Day Annapurna Route
The first day in the program is the drive from Pokhara towards the trail and a trek to Ghandruk. On the second day, the trek goes on to Upper Sinuwa and then towards Deurali, which is a longer climb.
Day 4 is the big destination day when the trekkers move from Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and onwards to Annapurna Base Camp (4130m). Following the time in the sanctuary, it takes them down towards Bamboo and back to Bhangar Danda, the natural hot spring area. The last day is a short trek to Samrung Khola and a drive back to Pokhara.
This makes the route ideal for those who would like a real high-altitude trekking experience but are not able to take on much of a longer Himalayan tour.
Following the Manaslu Circuit to Larkya La
The route towards the high mountains slowly passes from low river valleys, making the Manaslu trek slightly longer.
From Samagaon, the trek goes to Samdo, and then to Larkya Phedi or Dharmasala, which is located at 4,460m. The key pass crossing section is the next day. The route starts at an early point, ascends to the Larkya La (5,106m) and then heads down to Bhimthang.
Following the pass, the terrain changes once again, down through forest and to Tilje. Then, it is onward to Besisahar and then on to Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Which of the Two Treks is Most Difficult?
Both trails are classified as moderate, but the level of challenge varies.
The seven-day ABC route can be a challenge, as there is a significant amount of elevation and walking that is packed into a short time frame. Several days of seven or eight hours on the trail are included, such as the ascent to the sanctuary and the extended descent once you have arrived at base camp.
By contrast, the Manaslu Circuit covers a greater total distance and takes you significantly higher into the mountains.
Annapurna Base Camp vs Larkya La: The Altitude Difference
Its highest point is 4130m and on the Manaslu Circuit, Larkya La is at 5106m.
The difference is significant for the two trips. On the shorter ABC route, the hikes must be made at a fairly rapid rate, and on Manaslu the ascent must be made over the longer distance to the much higher pass.
On both routes being sensible, appropriate clothing, adequate preparation, and attention to how your body responds to altitude are important.
Cost, Permits and Other Practical Considerations
The ABC price for seven days is $450 to $700 per person, based on the type of group. The package covers meals on the trek, a licensed guide, Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, local transportation as mentioned on the itinerary, 6 nights’ tea-house accommodation, and others.
The standard price for two to six people for the 14-day Manaslu Circuit is $925 per person, varying for solo and larger groups. It contains the necessary permits, guide, accommodation, meals, transportation, and other services listed.
There are also other permits due to Manaslu being in a restricted area. Special Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and Tsum Nubri Rural Municipality entry permit are included in the listed requirements.
There is a possibility of changes in prices and/or regulations; current arrangements should always be confirmed before departure.
Accommodation, Food and Trail Conditions
No hotels are used in the trekking sections; only tea houses, guest houses and lodges are used on both routes. During the organized itineraries, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served.
Facilities are normally more easily located on the ABC route at lower elevations. There are not as many places to overlook in the higher elevations, and in very high The route also includes other amenities that in some instances may carry a premium, such as hot showers, internet access, mobile phone reception and more.
The route is getting more remote as you approach the villages of Samagaon, Samdo and Larkya Phedi.
Best Time to Trek
The optimal times to take the seven-day ABC route are the spring and fall seasons, peaking in March through May and September through December. The season is typically good weather for trekking and good visibility on the mountain.
The periods given as trekking seasons for Manaslu are from September to December and March to May. Blooming mountain flora and warmer weather occur in spring, and mountain visibility in autumn.
It is still possible for conditions to change at higher elevations, especially around the more prominent passes, so it is advisable to consult the latest weather and trail conditions.
How to Prepare for Either Trek
The amount of preparation should depend on the distance and challenges of the route. Walking, hill training, stair climbing, and cardiovascular activity are all good ways to develop the endurance that is required for long days on the trail.
Preparation is especially important for the 7-day ABC itinerary, due to the tight schedule. Easy-to-travel-in boots, warm clothes, rain gear, and appropriate high-altitude gear should be arranged beforehand.
Manaslu calls for a similar type of gear and the crossing of the Larkya La. A key piece of gear for a high-altitude trek is a warm sleeping bag, as is suitable footwear, trekking poles, and clothing suitable for cold weather.
Which Trek Fits Your Travel Plans?
This 7 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is perfect for those who are short on time but still wish to end up at one of the most popular base camps in the Himalaya. It unites mountains, Gurung culture, forest trails, and a peak at 4,130 meters, all in a short tour.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a longer trek through remote valleys and traditional settlements, but to the 5106m high Larkya La Pass.
Which option is better will depend on how much time you have, how fit you are, how much altitude you’re prepared for, and what type of trail experience you want. The needs of a one-week trekker in the Himalayas will be quite different from those of a person who is planning a two-week trek through the remote communities.
Final Thoughts
These two trails provide two different impressions of trekking in Nepal. The short Annapurna itinerary concentrates on reaching the grand and spectacular sanctuary and base camp in just seven days from the start, whereas the Manaslu Circuit slowly eases into the high alpine region and a major mountain pass from the river valleys and rural villages from the start.
Don’t make the decision based on the headline time. Think about walking hours per day, maximum elevation, how you’ll get there, permits/licences needed, accommodation, season, and physical requirements. With all of those things known, you can select the route you like best and that would fit your own time frame and traveling abilities.
